Stock Market Story: Jan. 31


The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 15.39 points, or 0.11%, at 13,925. The S&P 500 was up by 0.86 points, or 0.06%, at 1502. The Nasdaq was up 8.93 points, or 0.28%, at 3150. Major U.S. stock averages ended lower Wednesday after the government said the economy contracted in the fourth quarter. A spate of jobs numbers were released Thursday morning before the open ahead of Friday’s highly anticipated January nonfarm payrolls report.
